Underground tourist route
History of the Sandomierz cellarsTrade and well-organised crafts, provided wealth in the past centuries. Medieval Sandomierz was located on the path of important trade routes and took advantage of storage privileges. Merchants from Sandomierz engaged in trade, brought goods from different regions. These goods were also brought by visiting merchants. In order to store goods, merchants needed storages. Since Sandomierz was enclosed with defensive walls, the merchants without anymore space to build ground storages, started building the whole system of underground cellers and passages. The cellers were built between the XIII - XVI century, drilled under houses, backyards, squares and even streets. The lowest chambers were at the depth of 15 meters. The storages were widely used in the period of increased trade. After trade crashing, they became needless and vast majority of them was filled in. Only few were used.
